Senior Scientist Fermentation & Bioprocessing

As our Senior Scientist Fermentation & Bioprocessing at Corbion your role is to co-ordinate and participate hands-on in R&D projects close to or with operations, with small teams of technicians, and other scientists or specialists. Activities will focus on to the interface of lab and pilot-scale production and the technology transfer to operations at various production sites of Corbion worldwide. You combine a solid scientific background with a hands-on can-do mentality and a strong drive to deliver.

Main responsibilities

• support operations on troubleshooting, startups, transferring and implementation of new or improved fermentation processes
• scale-up / scale-down fermentation processes from lab to pilot to implementation and back
• identify opportunities for process improvements & develop initiatives to substantiate through R&D projects
• build insight, know-how and skills on fermentation processes for lactic acid and other products
• add scientific understanding to the empirical fermentation experience base in operations

Furthermore, this role is focused on:

• Executing projects, typically in (small) teams to support the implementation of new processes and products
• Translating the technology challenges of commercial plants to lab-scale trials at R&D as well as scaling up from lab to pilot.
• Building, maintaining and exploiting fermentation development and implementation skills
• Actively using internal and external professional networks

About you

In addition to educational achievements on a PhD level, the successful candidate for the position of Scientist Fermentation & Bioprocessing must also have:

• PhD in microbiology, biotechnology and / or fermentation
• Experience in (industrial) fermentation R&D
• Working experience in operational environment
• Pragmatic attitude combined with solid scientific basis, and proven ability to act on that with good result
• High level of flexibility combined with a strong sense of direction
• Good communication skills and intercultural sensitivity
• Experience with leading (small) teams and experience in industrial fermentation development (beyond lab scale) is considered a plus
• Willingness to travel
• Stress resilient; ability to deal effectively with ambiguity and scope changes
• Fluency in English (oral and written)
