POSITION SUMMARY:

 

The Principal Fermentation Engineer will play a pivotal role in the production and development of the natural ferment strategy. This position will spearhead fermentation growth and will be responsible for the transfer of new fermentation processes as well as support on-going production processes. The ideal candidate will be experienced in technology transfer in upstream and downstream processes from pilot/demo scale to production facilities. This position requires an in-depth understanding of engineering/processing issues involved in scale-up and possesses both practical and analytical skills to implement relevant scale-down models.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead implementation of new fermentation processes.
  • Lead optimization of the running the new fermentation processes through experimental design, planning and execution.
  • Develop mass balances, process flow diagrams P&IDs, economic analysis, SOPs & batch records.
  • Support the Peoria operations with regards to Fermentation. Mentor and support production team towards goal of zero contaminations and consistency in fermentations.
  • Perform data analysis to develop understanding of the tradeoffs between process parameters and key performance indicators.
  • Oversee equipment selection, modification, procurement, installation, and start-up in relation to fermentation.
  • Perform process modeling and simulation to optimize and predict performance at various operating conditions in cooperation with the R&D department in EU (the Netherlands).
  • Contribute to the company’s intellectual property (IP) portfolio and assist on preparation of patent applications.
  • Other duties as determined by business needs

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Ph.D. (preferred) or MS bioengineering or related field of study.
  • 10+ years of relevant industry experience in process engineering
  • In-depth technical expertise in operating and optimizing bio/chemical-reactor/fermentation processes at bench scale, pilot scale, demo scale up to commercial scale production.
  • Demonstrated hands on experience of pilot and industrial scale fermentation of food ingredients.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to collaborate in a cross-functional team of engineers, scientists, operators, vendors, and partners/collaborators.
  • Ability to work in an operational environment while also having a strong connection to the Corbion R&D fermentation department.
  • Strong technical and analytical proficiency, self-motivated, creative, and flexible in a fast-moving environment.
  • Technical knowledge of analytical methods as HPLC, YSI, GC.
  • Experience with process modeling and simulation using Aspen Plus or other computational tools is a plus
  • Possible travel up to 25% of the time to Europe for technology transfer with the R&D facility in Europe (The Netherlands)

  • Work is performed in a normal office setting and on a manufacturing floor. In the office setting, there will be minimal exposure to health or safety hazards, with substantial time spent working on a computer.
  • Requires sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate computer keyboard and other office equipment.
  • Laboratory /Pilot Fermentation operations will require dexterity and care to perform sterile transfers as required.
  • Production floor setting will result in exposure to hot and cold temperatures, noise, fumes, limited dust, and oily coolants.
  • Requires walking, climbing stairs, bending and occasional lifting of material up to fifty (50) pounds
  • The performance of this position will present exposure to an industrial environment and requires support and compliance with the published Company PPE policy including but not limited to the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses with side shields, appropriate attire, safety shoes, hard hat, hearing protection, etc.
  • Must be willing to work non-standard hours supporting a 24/7 operation including weekends as necessary.
