Sr. Downstream Refining Engineer

Position Summary

As our Senior Downstream/Refining Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in the production and development of our natural ferment strategy. You will spearhead downstream/product refining growth and will be responsible for the transfer of refining methods for new fermentation processes, as well as support on-going production processes. The ideal candidate will be experienced in technology transfer in downstream processes from pilot/demo scale to production facilities. This position requires an in-depth understanding of engineering/processing issues involved in scale-up and possesses both practical and analytical skills to implement relevant scale-down models.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead implementation of downstream processes for new fermentation products. 
  • Lead optimization of new refining processes through experimental design, planning and execution.
  • Develop mass balances, process flow diagrams, P&IDs, economic analysis, SOPs & batch records.
  • Support the Peoria operations with downstream process, which includes mentoring of the production team.
  • Perform data analysis to develop understanding of the tradeoffs between process parameters and key performance indicators. 
  • Oversee equipment selection, modification, procurement, installation, and start-up in relation to Downstream Operations. 
  • Perform process modeling and simulation to optimize and predict performance at various operating conditions in cooperation with the R&D department in EU (the Netherlands).
  • Contribute to the company’s intellectual property (IP) portfolio and assist on preparation of patent applications.
  • Conduct audits and follow up on actions required for compliance with company audits, such as GMP, HACCP, safety and environmental issues.
  • Other duties as determined by business needs

 

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. (preferred) or MS in Chemical or Bioengineering or related field of study.
  • 10+  years of relevant industry experience in process engineering.
  • In-depth technical expertise in operating and optimizing bio/chemical-reactor/refining processes at bench scale, pilot scale, demo scale up to commercial scale production.
  • Demonstrated hands on experience of pilot and industrial scale production of food ingredients.
  • Knowledge and expertise in various isolations, spray drying, powder agglomeration, crystallization, evaporation, membrane filtration, centrifugation and filtration.
  • Ability to collaborate in a cross-functional team of engineers, scientists, operators, vendors, and partners/collaborators. 
  • Ability to work in an operational environment while also having a strong connection to the Corbion R&D department.
  • Strong technical and analytical proficiency, self-motivated, creative, and flexible in a fast-moving environment.
  • Technical knowledge of analytical methods as HPLC, YSI, GC.
  • Experience with process modeling and simulation using Aspen Plus or other computational tools is a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Travel up to 15%-25% of the time to Europe for technology transfer with the R&D facility.
  • Must be willing to work non-standard hours supporting a 24/7 operation including weekends as necessary.

  • Work is performed in a normal office setting and on a manufacturing floor. In the office setting, there will be minimal exposure to health or safety hazards, with substantial time spent working on a computer.

  • Laboratory operations will require dexterity and care to perform studies as required.
  • Production floor setting will result in exposure to hot and cold temperatures, noise, fumes, limited dust, and oily coolants.
  • Requires walking, climbing stairs, bending and occasional lifting of material up to fifty (50) pounds
  • The performance of this position will present exposure to an industrial environment and requires support and compliance with the published Company PPE policy including but not limited to the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses with side shields, appropriate attire, safety shoes, hard hat, hearing protection, etc.
