We are seeking a Laboratory Manager to manage all aspects of our R&D laboratory operations in South San Francisco.  This key position is hands-on and oversees day-to-day laboratory operations, including sterile media preparation, equipment maintenance and calibration, and general laboratory housekeeping.  The manager will be our local EH&S representative who audits daily laboratory workflow to ensure that all operations are in compliance with regulatory standards. The manager is responsible for monitoring the receipt, storage and consumption of all laboratory reagents and consumables. The Laboratory Manager delivers results through effective leadership of a small team of technicians, and builds and maintains effective cross-functional partnerships with key stakeholders.  This position is based in South San Francisco and reports into the VP of Science and Technology.  



  • Manage the operations of the laboratory and ensure that they are accomplished within budget and to company, regulatory, and industry standards.
  • Ensure that aseptic/microbiological and sound chemical techniques are applied to the daily workload, especially in the Media Prep lab.
  • Manage laboratory safety program to ensure compliance with CalOSHA and company policies.
  • Maintain accreditation to certification bodies, when applicable.
  • Oversee training of new and current laboratory personnel in laboratory procedures and protocols.
  • Maintain compliance with the corporate laboratory policies, training requirements, and audit program.
  • Manage and approve laboratory expenditures, including calibration and repair services, supply orders, and chemical inventory.
  • Ensure that all required laboratory equipment is calibrated and properly functioning.
  • Periodically review and visually audit laboratory staff to ensure compliance with methods and regulations.
  • Review industry news and research to help consistently implement current best practices into laboratory operations
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. These duties may not be specifically listed in this description, but are within the general nature typically associated with the employee's level of work.



  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science or related field, and 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in lab management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory compliance standards
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of RCRA, Title 22 state regulations.
  • Hazwoper training is highly desirable
