An opportunity is available in our Pilot Plant group, which is located in Belmont, CA, to support downstream process development and technology transfer efforts. The successful candidate will be an integral member of a multi-disciplinary team focused on the development of new products and processes utilizing Corbion’s unique fermentation based technology.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Hands-on role in the setup, operation, and cleaning of bench and pilot scale experiments, with focus on downstream recovery from fermentation broth through final product.
  • Work on lab and pilot-scale processes including drying, particle size reduction, solid-liquid and liquid-liquid extractions, filtration, separation, chemical modification, etc. Operate lab and pilot equipment and processes independently.
  • Conduct analytical methods required to monitor processes and materials; hands-on skills with instrumental analysis and wet chemistry.
  • Provides detailed observations of experiments. Records data and assists with the analysis of results. Interpret and present experimental data. Identifies deviations with experiments and seeks appropriate advice to resolve. Write test protocols, SOP's and reports.
  • Work within a team framework, with both individual responsibility and support of other scientists.  Works closely with the Downstream Process Development, R&D, Facilities and Manufacturing Groups.
  • Maintains process area and equipment in good working order.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Qualified applicants will possess a B.S., MS or equivalent in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biology or a related field, with 1+ years industrial experience with relevant unit operations.
  • Prefer experience in operating and maintaining lab and pilot-scale process equipment (evaporator, drum drier, homogenizer, bead mill, continuous process centrifuge for solid-liquid and liquid-liquid separations, mechanical oil recovery press/extractor, process filtration equipment, oil (RBD) processing equipment, etc..) emphasizing processing of microbial broth/biomass and associated products produced by fermentation.
  • Prefer experience in analyzing biological materials using common analytical chemistry and wet chemistry methods.
  • Prefer hands-on mechanical skills with operation and maintenance of bioprocessing and utility system equipment. Must be able to lift 20 lbs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; and the ability to work both independently in a multi-disciplinary environment and as a key teammate within an interdisciplinary team
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment without sacrificing accuracy, quality of work, and safety.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word and Power Point
