Corbion Biotech, Inc. develops ingredients such as oils, and oil or protein rich biomass powders from microalgae for food, feed, and health based applications. As our next Senior Research Associate, you will use your analytical chemistry skills and experience to support product improvement and new product development initiatives. Position will be based in South San Franciso but will require periodic visits to our Belmont facility.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Perform various, routine chemical analyses on dried microalgal biomass and extracted oils,
    • Perform lab scale extraction of oil from biomass
  • Set up and run shelf-life/stability studies on dried microalgal biomass and extracted oils
  • Research, procure, set-up and maintain analytical equipment and equipment service contracts
    • Write standard operating procedures and validate methods for existing and new equipment and sample formats
  • Maintain detailed records, organize data, generate reports and prepare presentations as needed
  • Maintain a clean and organized lab ensuring compliance with GLP and EH&S practices
    • Order reagents and supplies to maintain adequate inventories
  • Prepare and submit samples to contract analytical labs as needed
    • Identify and establish relationships with new contract analytical labs as needed
  • Generate data to support the development of intellectual property
  • Other duties as determined by business needs.

 

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • BS in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field
  • 5+ years of experience working in a QC or R&D laboratory
  • Proficiency with basic wet chemistry techniques
  • Familiarity with oil chemistry and associated analytical methods
  • Ability to develop, validate and document analytical methods
  • Experience working with microalgae or microbial biomass and/or oils helpful
  • Proficiency working with analytical instruments such as Karl Fisher Analyzer for moisture determination, Titration for determination of peroxide and free fatty acid values, Rancimat for OSI determination, laser diffraction particle size analyzer, rheometer and viscometer, Hunter colorimeter, rotovap
  • Able to work independently
  • Highly organized and familiar with the use of advanced features of Excel for data management and statistical analyses
  • Resourceful at finding solutions to problems and learning new techniques as needed to support product development initiatives

 

The below range reflects the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. This range may be modified in the future. An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, performance, and business or organizational needs. The base salary range for this role is $75,000 to $100,000.
