An opportunity is available in our Belmont, CA Pilot Plant group to support downstream process development and technology transfer efforts. The successful candidate will be an integral member of a multi-disciplinary team focused on the development of new products and processes utilizing Corbion’s unique fermentation based technology.




  • Provides technical leadership and operational oversight for daily downstream process operations, activities and personnel. Demonstrate strong leadership and commitment to safety culture.
  • Hands-on role in the design, implementation, and operation of bench and pilot scale experiments, with focus on downstream recovery of microbial biomass and associated products from fermentation broth through final product.
  • Develop, support and/or optimize lab and pilot-scale operations including drying, particle size reduction, solid-liquid and liquid-liquid extractions, filtration, separation, mixing, chemical modification, etc. on microbial fermentation broth, biomass, and/or derived products. Utilize theoretical unit operation principles to support experimental design and characterization.  Perform mass and energy balances and performance assessments to characterize operations.
  • Maintain equipment and processes: trouble-shoot issues, provide maintenance and/or repair guidance.
  • Develop analytical methods required to monitor processes; hands-on skills with instrumental analysis and wet chemistry.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in laboratory notebook and/or batch records; write test protocols, SOP's and reports. Interpret and present analytical and experimental data to provide guidance for projects and process development.
  • Work within a team framework, with both individual responsibility and support of other colleagues.  Works closely with the Downstream Process Development, R&D, Facilities and Manufacturing Groups.
  • Evaluate, procure and operate lab and pilot plant equipment to support operations and characterize products.  Work with internal and external resources to define process requirements for new equipment installation or modifications to existing equipment, including P&ID reviews/revisions, pre-startup safety reviews, development of SOPs and training personnel, and providing oversight for commissioning and startup.
  • Transfer technology and knowledge to commercial operations.
  • Plan and coordinate external development projects with contract labs and vendors as needed





  • Qualified applicants will possess a B.S., MS or equivalent in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field, with 10+ years industrial experience with relevant unit operations processing microbial fermentation broth, biomass, and derived products.
  • Experience in operating and maintaining lab and pilot-scale equipment (evaporator, drum drier, homogenizer, mixing operations, bead mill, continuous process centrifuge for solid-liquid and liquid-liquid separations, mechanical oil recovery press/extractor, process filter, oil (RBD) processing equipment, etc.) used for processing microbial fermentation broth, biomass, and derived products.
  • Experience in analyzing biological materials preferably of microbial origin using common analytical chemistry and wet chemistry methods, as well as developing and conducting physical chemistry/process characterization methods.
  • Experience with scale-up from lab to pilot to production and scale-down of production operations to pilot-scale for relevant unit operations.  Experience with application of theoretical unit operation principles to support scale-up/down and technology transfer.
  • Skillful in problem solving and trouble-shooting data, equipment, and procedures.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment without sacrificing accuracy, quality of work, and safety.
  • Good organizational and time management skills with experience managing direct reports (process development technicians, associates, and engineers) preferably with a leadership role; and the ability to work both independently and as a key teammate within an interdisciplinary team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication with routine presentation of information to technical teams and management
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Power Point, and Word with ability to learn other computer software as necessary
  • May need occasional travel
